Sixers Sign Veteran Guard Vernon Maxwell

PHILADELPHIA Vernon Maxwell, a 12-year veteran who twice led the league in 3-point field goals, was signed by the Philadelphia 76ers. The 35-year-old Maxwell averaged 10.9 points per game for the Seattle Supersonics last season.
He was acquired by the New York Knicks as part of the blockbuster trade that sent center Patrick Ewing to Seattle but was waived in training camp. Maxwell, a member of NBA championship teams with the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995, previously played for the Sixers in 1995-96, averaging 16.2 points and leading the team in assists. He led the NBA with 172 3-point field goals made in 1991 and again in 1992 with 162. Maxwell, who has also played for San Antonio, Orlando, Charlotte and Sacramento, owns career averages of 13.2 points and 3.6 assists per game.
